Lombard Summer Banners!

My summer banners are up! I want to thank Bridget Doyle, Communications Coordinator for the Village of Lombard for giving me the opportunity to make some art for my town! I really enjoyed painting the images of summer. Here are some of the steps I took to make the paintings.

I always start with thumbnails of drawings they help me get the composition right. It’s also a great way to get a lot of ideas out of your head and on to the paper. You can see all 43 thumbnails here.

After Bridget and her team picked the ones they like best I did some more detailed sketches. This helps me get an even better idea of what I want the final image to look like. You can see all 8 of the detail sketches here.

Then I set out to painting them. I did 6 in all. One that wasn’t included in the detailed sketches were the fireworks paintings. I made 2 versions of the fireworks. I was just trying something out for the first time. I had no idea how I would paint fireworks in watercolor. But I kind of like how they turned out. Let me tell you Lombard really puts on a great fireworks display every 4th of July!

Let’s paint the town red or purple…

Maybe we can get a group together and paint the town red, literally! We could meet at various places around town like The Corner House and sketch, doodle or paint the details that make this town great.

Other artists call these events Sketch Crawls. There’s also an art movement going on called Urban Sketching.

We could even end up at Carlson’s and stock up on supplies. We could make a book, postcards, cups or even t-shirts to help promote Lombard. I wonder if any merchants would be up for hosting gallery screenings?

New Eats

If you haven’t picked up any steaks at Shannon’s lately you might have might have missed the new sign in the window two doors down.

Looking forward to having a new place to eat in Downtown Lombard. So keep an eye out for the opening. Maybe I’ll see ya there!

It’s Almost Spring Again

In February the local Dairy Queen opens back up again in Lombard, IL. Now I know it should stay open all year round because most Lombardians would stand out there in 2 feet of snow to get their ice cream fix.

But they don’t. Come the middle November it’s all over and we have to wait.

But the wait is over and I can make my way down here on Sunday nights and get my wife’s usual and my Blizzard even in the middle of a blizzard. The line wasn’t long tonight but give it a few more weeks. It always takes a little bit of time for everyone to remember.

Wine Anyone?

If you have a question about wine all you need to do is ask Visal Kheam and he can give you a recommendation for any occasion.

20West has seen a lot of changes over the years and by far the best have been in the last two. When Visal came to Lombard to build a business he also wanted to give back to the community, and he does. With his expertise, not only as wine connoisseur but wanting to help causes that are important to his customers and his community.

If you haven’t been in the store in a while you owe it to yourself to see the changes he’s made. The improvements and atmosphere really lend themselves to exploring the vast selection of wines and beers he offers. If you’re not sure what you looking for just ask him or the employees, and they’ll point you in the right direction. Or just keep on the look out for his wine tasting events. There you’ll get the chance to try some wine and learn something about the bottle you’ll choose.
